Maryborough’s A grade netball finals chances are hanging by a thread, but they’ll have a chance to get back on the winners’ list this week against Strathfieldsaye.
Bulk changes and unavailability hampered the Magpies last week, but there were times when they were able to challenge, such as the second quarter, when they lost by 10 goals, as well as the last, where they scored six goals.
Tali Chadwick fought hard against the tide, getting an opportunity to improve her midcourt prowess by playing in centre for a couple of quarters, while Finley Wagstaff fought hard in defence. Amanda Durbridge was another who played well, playing in wing defence.
Abbey Nalder provided much of the offensive firepower in the goalcircle, scoring 16 of the Magpies’ 18 goals, while Ava Harrison fought hard in her first A grade game.
The Magpies will now be looking to take a second consecutive win against the Storm, after splitting their previous two encounters.
In 2022, the Storm held on for a three-goal win in round six, but the Magpies put up an impressive performance to take a 23-goal victory in the return meeting in round 15.
Elsewhere around the club, the Magpies under 17 team will be looking to keep in touch with the top three when they play the fifth-placed Storm.
A win here could see the Magpies in prime position to secure a finals berth early on, and could sit as many as three and a half games inside the top five if results go their way.
The Magpies took a 40-goal victory against South Bendigo last week, a result which saw them bounce back after two consecutive losses.
