They were successful against Eaglehawk in both their meetings in 2022, and now Maryborough will be looking for another win tomorrow as they look to get on the board for 2023.
With a much different team on the court, sporting a youthful edge, Maryborough started their season well last Saturday by keeping up with 2022 finalists Castlemaine, but were ultimately unable to win, instead going down by 10 goals.
It was the first and last quarters which made all the difference last weekend, with Castlemaine establishing a five-goal lead at the first break, before outscoring the Magpies by three goals in the last period.
However, the middle two quarters would have heartened playing-coach Jordan MacIlwain, as they were able to stay within one goal in both quarters.
Keely Hare started 2023 as her usual prominent self under the ring, scoring 29 goals, while Tori Chandler and Tali Chadwick played well across mid-court.
Maryborough now travel to Eaglehawk boasting good memories of both their matches in 2022.
A strong first half in their round four clash saw them establish a 16-goal lead at the main break, before going on to win by 26 goals at Princes Park, scoring 56 goals in the process — their second best return of the season.
In their second meeting, in round 13, it was a tighter affair, with Maryborough having to come from behind to win.
Sitting four goals behind at the first change, Maryborough were able to hit the front by half time, but in what proved to be a topsy-turvy game, Eaglehawk again hit the front by the final break, sitting pretty by three goals.
But a big final quarter which yielded 13 goals to the Hawks’ nine saw them take victory by the barest of margins, winning 51-50.
On that occasion, Hare scored 33 goals, while MacIlwain and Eliza Roughead won plaudits for their physical style of play which was required.
A win will give the Magpies some good confidence ahead of a meeting with 2022 runner-up Kangaroo Flat at Princes Park next week.
