After three tough losses, the Magpies will be back on the road tomorrow when they play the also-winless Kyneton.
Inaccuracy cruelled the Magpies’ chances of a long-awaited victory last week against Kangaroo Flat, although there were some very solid signs.
Jake Lohmann returned to the fold, and was the Magpies’ best player for the day. It could have been even better too, but 1.4 on the scoreboard prevented him from having one of the most dominant displays from a Maryborough player in recent memory.
The form of Bailey Snelling and Bailey Edwards in their first games for the season showed that Maryborough had some more options across the midfield, while Brady Neill has had a strong start to the season.
While the club are still sorely missing captain-coach Coby Perry, the club has been led admirably by Ty Stewart, who has battled hard in the ruck.
Maryborough will now look to improve from their two clashes against Kyneton last season, which saw them lose by 75 and 101 points respectively.
In the round nine clash at Princes Park, a slow start cost the Magpies, as they went goalless throughout the first half, kicking seven behinds, while Kyneton kicked 11 goals to take a 64-point half time lead.
The second half was much better from the Magpies, as they kicked five goals to Kyneton’s seven to eventually lose 5.13 (43) to 18.10 (118).
Perry was the Magpies’ best on that occasion, with Aidan Hare, Liam Murphy, Jayden Hooper, Lucas Hurse and Jake Postle supporting him.
The final game of the season last year saw Kyneton pile on nine goals in the opening term, and led by as much as 117 points by three-quarter-time.
But a three-goal to zero last quarter gave the Magpies a little bit of respect, as they lost 4.8 (32) to 19.19 (133).
Neill was their best that day, with Dylan Harberger, Thomas Gardam, Hooper, Perry and Kya Lanfranchi also named in the best.
A couple of changes are expected to be made due to injury, with the potential for the Magpies to call upon players from their under 18s, who continued their stunning start to the season with a 36-point victory over the Kangaroos last week.
Tom Myers has started the under 18 season strongly and could be considered a chance to add to the Magpies’ height across the ground, while Oscar Tatchell could be blooded after strong performances over the last fortnight.
Either way, it gives the Magpies cohort plenty to get excited about, knowing the future of the club are performing strongly.
