Maryborough will be looking for a consistent four-quarter performance when they host Golden Square this week.
Although recent results in the corresponding clashes between these two sides have seen the Bulldogs win comfortably, the 2022 preliminary finalists have had a bit of a shaky start so far this season, losing their past two games to Sandhurst and South Bendigo.
Maryborough will have a bit of a different goal this weekend, looking to find some consistency as they look to rebound from a 156-point loss to Kyneton last week.
A very young Magpies outfit took to the field last week, and did have some promising moments, including a good 10 minute patch to finish off the first quarter which yielded two goals.
However, the Tigers proved too strong for the day, kicking 10 goals in the final quarter to blow the margin out.
Nevertheless, the younger Magpie players impressed.
Chris Freeman, Lucas Hurse, Jake Postle, Jai Howell, debutant Cobie Read and Alex Brown were all named in the best on Saturday.
The task against Square will be a difficult one, with the Magpies losing twice against them in 2022 by convincing margins.
In round three, the Bulldogs were dominant from go to whoa, kicking 17 goals in the first half, before adding 19 in the second half, including 11 in the final quarter, to win by 218 points.
It was a tough day, but Coby Perry, Kya Lanfranchi, Aidan Hare, Thomas Gardam, Jayden Hooper and Freeman gave their all.
It was a better outing in the return clash in round 12, with Square getting on top of the Magpies from quarter time onwards.
Twenty-six goals in the final three quarters allowed Square to take a 163-point win.
Brady Neill, Tom Myers, Dylan Harberger, Patrick Chard, Hooper and Hare were named in the best players on that occasion.
Around the club, the under 18s will be the showpiece event on Saturday, with a clash between first and third on the ladder.
The Magpies have been super-impressive in their four games so far, but this clash with the Bulldogs will be their biggest test.
