A slow start proved costly for Maryborough in their A grade netball clash with Strathfieldsaye on Saturday.

Looking for a win to keep their slim top five chances alive, the Magpies were made to pay by a Storm outfit who took their chances in the first half to establish a match-winning lead by the main break.

The Storm were able to score 19 goals in the first quarter, taking control of the midcourt from the outset, while holding Maryborough to seven goals from just 12 opportunities. The returning Keely Hare scored five goals, while Abbey Nalder scored two.

Strathfieldsaye continued to dominate in the second quarter, and were lethal in front of their goal ring, scoring 18 goals from 20 opportunities. At the other end, the Magpies were again held to seven goals, with Hare again scoring five goals, and Nalder two, with the Magpies trailing by 23 goals at the main break.

Maryborough lifted their game in the third quarter, and were able to get their offence clicking, scoring 13 goals, while Strathfieldsaye scored another 17 goals. Hare scored on eight occasions, while Nalder added five more goals.

The last quarter was much the same — while Maryborough were able to lift their scoring, the Storm were just a little bit better, as they scored 15 goals to the Magpies’ 12 to eventually finish 30-goal winners, 69-39.

Hare’s eight final-quarter goals took her tally to 26 for the day, while Nalder added another four to score 13.

Elsewhere, Maryborough’s B grade team fell just short of recording their first victory of the season in a brave effort against the fourth-placed Storm, going down by just four goals, while B reserve went down by 24 goals. In a topsy-turvy game of momentum, the 17 and under team had a dramatic draw with the Storm to maintain fourth spot on the ladder, while slightly losing some ground on the top three. Maryborough’s next assignment doesn’t get easier, with a trip to second-placed Gisborne on the horizon.
