Maryborough were unable to contain a powerful Golden Square outfit on Saturday afternoon, going down by 163 points.
However, the loss has continued the Magpies’ recent theme of im-provement, whittling down the 218-point loss that they had suffered to the same side in round three.
The Magpies had a very competitive opening quarter when they were able to restrict Square to just two goals to stay in the game at quarter time, however they were unable to hit the scoreboard themselves, with their only shot at goal going wide for one behind.
The second quarter was a spark for Golden Square, as they were able to pile on eight goals to just two points in the second to snuff out any designs the Magpies had on a major upset, leading by 70 points at half time.
The third quarter proved to be Maryborough’s best in terms of scoreboard impact, but also their most challenging in terms of stopping Square from hitting the scoreboard.
Patrick Van der pol was able to shark a loose ball from the top of the goal square to dribble through Maryborough’s first goal of the afternoon early in the second half, while a few minutes later, Jai Howell was able to rove a clever punch to his advantage from Patrick Chard and goal on the run to put through the Magpies’ second goal of the quarter. Riley Hamilton put through another goal from a 50 metre penalty to give the Magpies three for the quarter, but were unable to stop Square from kicking 11 goals themselves as they trailed by 122 points at the final change.
Square were able to build their lead in the final quarter, kicking another seven goals, while Maryborough’s sole goal of the last quarter came via a clever Jake Postle snap from the pocket.
In the end, the Magpies were defeated 4.5 (29) to 28.24 (192).
Brady Neill was the Magpies’ best player in what was a valiant effort in the ruck, with Tom Myers, Dylan Harberger, Patrick Chard, Jayden Hooper and Aidan Hare also amongst the best players.
The Magpies face another challenging game this weekend when they travel to ladder-leading Gisborne.
