Maryborough just missed out on their sixth win to close out the 2022 season, losing to Kyneton by five goals in what was a tightly contested match.

For large parts of the day, Kyneton led the way, but the Magpies were able to cut the margin to two goals during the final quarter.

It was the Tigers that had the better start, scoring 15 goals to 11 in the opening quarter to open up a four-goal lead.

They were able to extend their margin by another three goals in the second term, scoring 12 goals to nine to take a 27-20 lead at the main change.

Coach Alicia Cassidy swung some changes in the third quarter, swapping Keely Hare and Jordan MacIlwain in the goal circle, playing Tori Chandler behind the ball in wing defence and putting Zoey Bucknall into centre.

It proved to be an inspired move, as Maryborough were able to close the gap in the third quarter, scoring 13 goals to the Tigers’ 11 to move to within five goals at the final change.

In an attempt to win the game, Chrissy Hooper was moved into centre, with Chandler moving to wing attack. And despite starting well enough in the last quarter, the Tigers were able to fend off all of the Magpies’ advances, scoring 10 goals apiece as they held on for a 48-43 victory.

Eliza Roughead and Hooper were the better players for Maryborough, and Alex Williams acquitted herself well in her first game of A grade netball.

In an even performance in the goal circle, Hare scored 23 goals, with MacIlwain adding 20.

While Maryborough’s senior season is now over, there is a great sense of improvement throughout the year, having recorded five victories — an improvement from last season, in which the Magpies recorded just one win.

The season is also not quite over for the Magpies just yet — there’s also the matter of the 17 and under team’s finals campaign, starting next Sunday morning at Queen Elizabeth Oval when they face Golden Square in a do-or-die elimination final.
