It was Maryborough’s toughest outing of the season so far, with a well-drilled Golden Square team taking a 239-point win.
Maryborough were up for the fight early in the game, and after conceding the first goal of the contest, got themselves back on level terms with Matt Johnston’s excellent snap out of congestion getting the Magpies on the board.
But that was as good as it got for the Magpies, with Golden Square dominating proceedings from there.
The Bulldogs would add 10 more goals in the opening quarter to establish a 66-point lead at the first break, and it just got bigger as the first half wore on, with a further eight goals to no score giving them a 119-point lead at the main break.
A run of 23 consecutive goals for Golden Square was ended by perhaps Maryborough’s best passage of the day, with Brady Neill’s centre clearance, weaving around multiple Bulldog players, giving the Magpies a chance to score, and Lucas Hurse used good positioning to earn a free kick, which he duly converted for their second goal of the afternoon.
It was not enough to stop Square’s scoring run as they added a further four goals to lead by 171 points at the final break.
It was all Square in the last quarter, kicking a further 11 goals to just two behinds in what was easily the toughest assignment of their season to this point.
The Magpies had no answer to the goal-kicking combo of Joel Brett, who kicked 10 goals, as well as Braydon Vaz, who added a further eight.
Despite that, Kya Lanfranchi gave his all to the cause, and was named their best, and Jake Postle, Alex Brown, Joel Swatton, Hurse and Neill were also named in the best.
It was a tough day all round for the club, with the reserves and under 19s also going down to a very physical Bulldogs outfit.
