Maryborough were unable to stop a potent Strathfieldsaye team from dominating on the weekend, going down by 41 goals.

Pre-game, there was a big boost for the Magpies, with Maggie Tranter returning to the A grade team for her first game since last season.

However, Strathfieldsaye were in the mood as they tried to keep the slimmest of finals chances alive, and were able to pile on 16 goals to just four in the first term to open up a 12-goal lead at the first break. Keely Hare and Abbey Nalder scored two goals each.

A small change was made as Nalder and Hare swapped positions in the goal circle, hoping to generate more goals. It worked, as they were able to score nine goals for the quarter, but it wasn’t enough to prevent Strathfieldsaye from adding another 21 as they were proving to be dominant on every line. Hare scored eight goals for the quarter, while Nalder added one.

It was much of the same in the third quarter as the Storm were continuing to generate many chances, while Maryborough were looking to make the most of their limited opportunities. In the end, the Storm scored 20 goals to nine to extend their lead to 35 goals at the final change. Hare added seven goals, while Nalder scored two.

The final quarter was Maryborough’s best, as they proved to be competitive with the Storm, but it wasn’t enough to see them win the quarter, with the Storm scoring 14 goals to eight to eventually run out comfortable winners. Hare scored five more goals, while Nalder added three.

Elsewhere, Maryborough’s B grade and B reserve team had a tough day, with the B grade girls losing by 35 goals, while B reserve lost by 42 goals.

However, there was a big positive when the 17 and under team locked in their spot in the finals, taking a six-goal win over Strathfieldsaye in what was a big psychological boost ahead of what will be a week one finals meeting.

The A grade will finish their season off with a difficult task against second-placed Gisborne at home on Saturday.
