Maryborough utilised a fast start to keep themselves well and truly entrenched in the Bendigo Football Netball League’s A reserve top five with a 12-goal victory over Golden Square.

The Magpies were able to hold the lead from the outset and staved off every challenge from the Bulldogs, who were able to fight hard in the second and third quarters in particular.

But it was a great start from the Magpies which saw them score 13 goals to six in the first term to lead by seven goals at the first change. Megan Kelly started well in scoring eight goals for the term, while Jordan MacIlwain scored five.

The second term was a struggle, with both teams getting good looks at goal. Eventually, however, the quarter would finish as it started, with both teams scoring 12 goals to leave Maryborough sitting pretty in front, 25-19. Both Kelly and MacIlwain would score six goals for the quarter, despite shifting positions.

The third quarter saw Maryborough increase their lead slightly, scoring 11 goals to nine for the quarter to see them lead 36-28 at the final change. Kelly and MacIlwain reverted to their original positions, and it was MacIlwain who scored nine goals for the quarter, while Kelly added two.

The final quarter saw Mary-borough shoot clear, scoring nine goals to six to eventually take their win, with Kelly finishing with six goals to take her tally to 22 for the day, with MacIlwain’s three seeing her finish with 23.

The game would be the only success for Maryborough on Saturday, with the other three netball grades going down in tight affairs.

B grade were left to rue a slow start in going down by 15 goals, as did B reserve, who stormed home in the last quarter, but were still 11 goals short. The 17 and under girls were very much in contention at half time, but it was the third quarter which proved the difference for the Magpies, eventually going down by nine goals.

The Magpies will look to continue their good run in A reserve this week when they travel to Eaglehawk.
