Maryborough fought hard on Saturday, but it was Golden Square’s power across the ground which allowed the Bulldogs to reign supreme at Barker Oval Princes Park, winning by 168 points.

It was a more respectable effort from the Magpies which came amidst a tough week with questions swirling about the future of the club.

But with players slowly starting to filter back into the lineup, the senior group is steadily getting to be more competitive.

The club sported their Indigenous round jumper as part of the annual Bendigo Football Netball League round on Saturday afternoon.

However, it was a tough start on Saturday, with the Bulldogs running rampant in the opening term to score eight goals from 16 scoring shots, leading by 56 points at the first change.

The Magpies, to their credit, fought hard in the second term, restricting the Bulldogs to five goals, and were able to hit the scoreboard themselves, with Coby Perry leading from the front in slotting a classy running goal at full pelt.

Leading by 81 points at the main break, the Bulldogs were hoping to put the foot down in the third term and did so successfully, scoring eight goals. However, Maryborough did have some nice moments, with Tannar Santon scoring from a set shot on his senior debut, while Robert Castiglia also scored from a free kick.

At the final change, the margin was 121 points, and the Bulldogs were able to continue on their way in the last quarter, scoring six goals.

Perry put in a terrific outing as he led from the front, while Ash Humphrey was another who worked hard. Kya Lanfranchi, Tom Myers, Alex Brown and the returning Seb Collins were also named in the best players.

Maryborough’s reserves were unable to take the park again on Saturday, while the under 18 squad fought hard against Golden Square, before eventually losing by 70 points, with Tyson Hoban kicking the Magpies’ only goal. James Woods, Joe Lovel, Cooper Mark, Jack Skinner, Diesel Palmer and Jarrah Edwards were all named in the Magpies’ best players for the afternoon.
