Starting the weekend was the under 10s making the long road trip to Toolleen Reserve to take on Mt Pleasant, with a close contest unfolding between the two young sides.

The Magpies put up a great fight throughout the game, with their efforts pleasing coach Mick Noonan.

In his first year of football, Charlie Jane produced his best game of the season, while Tex Harrnety also impressed and was rewarded with a great goal.

It continues to be pleasing to see the development of Maryborough’s youngest footballers as they gain experience, build confidence and improve their skills with every game.

As they continue to miss several key players, the under 12 Magpies travelled to Bendigo to face a determined St Theresa’s side.

A hard-fought first half saw neither team able to gain any real momentum before the home side took control in the third quarter to lead by 10 points at the final change.

An early Maryborough goal in the last quarter reduced the margin to just four points, but despite repeated forward entries the Magpies were unable to capitalise, eventually going down by five points.

Captain Manny Shepherd led the way with plenty of possessions, while his tackling and pressure were outstanding. Ruckman Harvey Congram also battled hard against a taller opponent.

The Magpies will now look to bounce back as they aim to consolidate their position in the top five.

Maryborough’s under 14s travelled to Wesley Hill Recreation Reserve on Sunday to take on a slick Castlemaine combination.

With scores level at quarter time, the contest was evenly poised, but a costly second term saw the home side take control, kicking five goals to Maryborough’s one to establish a handy advantage.

Castlemaine continued to apply the pressure after half time, adding another four goals to one during the third quarter to put the game beyond the Magpies’ reach. Maryborough continued to battle out the contest but eventually went down 13.5.(83) to 5.6.(36).

It proved to be an off day for the Magpies, who were unable to reproduce some of the stronger football they have shown during the season.

The team will now turn its attention to next week and the opportunity to bounce back when it takes on third-placed Kangaroo Flat.
