A dominant second half display was the impetus for Maryborough getting back on track in the A grade netball competition, winning by 19 goals to keep in touch with the top five.
Despite Golden Square’s tough start to the season, losing all of their opening four games, they were proving to be a handful in the opening stages.
But the combination of Keely Hare and Jordan MacIlwain were able to keep them ahead as they were able to pour in multiple goals apiece. Hare scored 10 goals, while MacIlwain added eight to give Maryborough a three-goal lead in the early stages.
The Magpies shifted their philosophy in the second, with Hare moving to goal attack and MacIlwain to goal shooter. It worked a treat with Hare scoring another 10 goals, while MacIlwain added seven more, and with Golden Square scoring 14 goals it meant that the Magpies took a six-goal lead into half time.
It was all the Magpies in the third quarter, as they started to take control of the midcourt and generated multiple opportunities. Defensively, they were holding Golden Square to fewer shots as well.
Eleven goals to Hare and seven more to MacIlwain helped Maryborough score 18 goals to 12 for the quarter as they increased their lead to 12 goals at the last break.
In the last term as the Pies stayed strong, adding 20 goals with Hare scoring 11 and MacIlwain nine, while holding Golden Square to 13.
Tali Chadwick and Finley Wagstaff had stellar displays as the youngsters continued their excellent seasons.
The A grade success was Maryborough’s sole win of the day, with the B grade, B reserve team and 17 and under team all going down despite their best efforts.
