It was a tough day for Maryborough in their clash with Kyneton, going down by 156 points.
Pre-game, playing-coach Coby Perry was able to bring a couple of senior debutants into the team, handing Liam Freeman and Cobie Read their first senior games, with both eventually acquitting themselves well coming up from the under 18s.
However, Kyneton were in no mood to give the Magpies a sniff, kicking the first six goals of the game within the first 18 minutes to give themselves complete control.
Maryborough were able to get on the board for the first time when Matt Johnston was able to control the ball on the boundary line before running into an open goal.
As the rain started to intensify, the Magpies made a good finish to the quarter, and were rewarded with a second goal when Jai Howell goaled from long range.
At quarter time, the margin was 29 points, but any thought of a Magpie fightback were thwarted when the Tigers were able to kick the only five goals of the second quarter, while the Magpies remained scoreless to see themselves trailing at the long break by 67 points.
The third quarter saw Kyneton kick the first three goals of the quarter to extend their lead to 84 points before Chris Freeman was rewarded for his good pressure by kicking a goal from a good tackle to give the Magpies their first since the opening quarter.
But the Tigers responded with the final three goals of the term to push the margin beyond the 100 point mark at the last change.
It was all Kyneton in the last quarter, with the Tigers kicking 10 goals, while Maryborough’s sole major came after Ty Stewart was able to lead strongly and convert a set shot. Final scores saw Kyneton win 28.18 (186) to 4.6 (30).
Despite the 156-point margin, there were some good passages at times, and Perry would have been thrilled with the form of some younger players, such as Read, who was named in the best, as well as Lucas Hurse, who was also named among the better players. Chris Freeman, Jake Postle, Howell and Alex Brown were also named in the best for the afternoon.
Elsewhere, Maryborough had another success in the under 18 competition, making it four victories on the trot to start season 2023.
The 14.8 (92) to 8.3 (51) victory was highlighted by the forward line combination of Taj Bond, who kicked six goals, as well as young livewire Robbie Muscat, who added four goals in a best-on-ground performance.
