Just days before Christmas a Maryborough man had the surprise of his life, taking home a “spur-of-the-moment” $111,000 Keno win.

“I’ll tell you what, it’s a very nice early Christmas gift, isn’t it?” the winning man laughed when a Keno official called to confirm his win last week.

“I’d been out and about just running a few errands when I walked past the club and thought, ‘I should just stop in’.

“I sat down for about 10 minutes and put a few games of Keno on, and all of a sudden, my numbers just started popping up on the screen — my jaw just hit the floor.

“I’m so fortunate because it was the ultimate spur-of-the-moment decision, I could have just kept walking.”

The man held a Keno Classic 9 winning entry in draw 975 purchased at the Maryborough Highland Society and drawn on Thursday, December 21 and scored a substantial $111,631 win.

A Keno draw occurs approxi-mately every three minutes. During each draw, 20 numbers are drawn from 1 to 80. Players simply match the numbers on their entry to the numbers drawn for a chance to win over $1 million.

The man said he and his wife will investigate an overseas holiday in 2024 to celebrate.

“I’m very close to retirement so it’s just the cream on top of the cake. I’m over the moon,” he said.

“My wife and I will look to book an overseas holiday and I’ll invest the rest for our future.

“I’m going to enjoy 2024, I think.”

Maryborough Highland Society gaming supervisor Belinda Wood said the whole team were over the moon to have sold a major prize-winning entry in Keno.

“It’s a fantastic to see a win like this happen in the club just in time for Christmas too,” she said.

“Last year we had another big Keno win in the club so it’s great to have another one just as 2023 is about to come to an end.

“We just want to wish our winner a wonderful Christmas and New Year and hope this win is a sign of good things for 2024.”

It’s the second year running a Maryborough resident has scored it big just before Christmas, with a local woman taking home almost $900,000 on Christmas Eve after purchasing a winning ticket from Maryborough’s newsXpress.

In the 2023 financial year, Keno players across the eastern states celebrated more than 95.42 million wins collectively worth more than $1.34 billion.

During this time, Keno crowned 20 millionaires and multi-millionaires who collectively took home more than $46 million. Four of these major winners were from Victoria, including a Moe woman who picked up a $2.24 million windfall.
