The Central Goldfields Art Gallery (CGAG) will be opening their newest major exhibition, LOVE, this weekend.
The free to visit exhibition aims to show the different meanings and feelings of love through a rich array of paintings, sculptures and other visual arts drawn from collections across the region.
Central Goldfields Shire mayor Liesbeth Long said the $2 million redevelopment of the gallery has opened up new opportunities for the community to experience more art.
“CCAG is now borrowing from an impressive list of other gallery collections thanks to its major upgrade completed in March this year,” she said.
“By broadening the scope of works included in our exhibitions, we have opened up new opportunities for our community and the many visitors to Maryborough. They can now see both international and local works side-by-side.”
A key upgrade to the gallery has been a new gallery space which has improved cooling and conditioning. This allows the gallery to display certain paintings and artworks without being damaged.
Twelve artists’ works will be displayed including international sculptor Sabatino. However, art gallery coordinator Helen Kaptein said she is even more excited to display the work of Maryborough wedding photographer, Wal Richards.
“Wal’s photographs are a remarkable social documentary of the people, fashions, architecture and cars in regional Australia over half a century,” Ms Kaptein said.
“Whilst it is amazing that we can now have these internationally recognised artworks in our gallery because of the redevelopment, we still want it to be a gallery that connects with the community and shows some incredible stories like Wal’s.”
Mr Richards took over 20,000 wedding pictures in the local community over his career, riding from one wedding to another on a bicycle.
The exhibition has been supported by the Ararat Gallery Textile Art Museum Australia, Bendigo Art Gallery, Castlemaine Art Museum and the Cascade Art Gallery Golden Dragon Museum.
Ms Kaptein said these contributions have made the whole exhibition possible.
“The galleries have been so generous to us in terms of the expensive artwork and casings they have given us for this exhibition,” she said.
Artists in the exhibition include David Rosetzsky, Georgia MacGuire, Dean Bowen, Kate Bergin, Denis Chapman, Jeff Gardner, David Bowen, Aunty Marilyne Nicholls, Norman Lindsay and Vipoo Srivilasa.
The exhibition will be on display until Sunday, April 14, 2024 with multiple public programs surrounding the exhibition. A celebration launch will be held this Sunday, December 17 at 2 pm with visitors encouraged to wear a splash of red.
