At the heart of Coral and Headley Paul’s journey, as they get ready to celebrate six decades of companionship, lies a single four letter word — love.
With their 60th anniversary approaching on Thursday, the pair will mark the diamond year this Thursday, with the bond they share proving to be stronger than the precious gem itself.
Maryborough locals — the Pauls first met when Coral was working at a garage in town that Headley frequented to pump up his bike’s tires — or as Coral tells the story, it was an excuse for the then 21-year-old boy to see her.
Soon after, their four-year-long courtship began and they eventually got married when Coral was in her early twenties and Headley was 25.
Now, in their 80s, with three children, five grandkids and three great grandchildren, the couple have built their dream life together — and Headley summed up their secret in one word.
“Love,” he said.
“We love each other and we always have, what else could you say.”
It’s clear they’re both still as smitten with each other as they were when they first locked eyes — so much so that their lives remain closely intertwined.
“We’ve always done things together and we love doing that,” Coral said.
“We have the same interests, we both love gardening and the outdoors and we’ve travelled the world together.
“Headley and I, we just stick with each other — I’d be lost without him.”
Their advice to young couples navigating their relationship through tough times is also relatively straightforward — just don’t give up.
“You must agree with each other. If Coral wants to do something, I just go along with it even if I don’t want to, I do it for her,” Headley said.
“If you fight, you just need to sit down and talk to each other — figure it out together, you shouldn’t leave.”
