Two long-time Maryborough Karate Club members were rewarded for their loyalty and dedication to their services by testing, and receiving, their first-degree Black Belt.

Creswick’s Rod Curnow and St Arnaud’s Brendon Gartside carried out the final section of their test on Monday.

The test has been ongoing throughout the past six months, which has taken in the karate style, philosophy and history on the island of Okinawa, Japan. Their Grand Master, Hanshi Kise, resides on the island.

Both Curnow and Gartside have trained for over 20 years, and Monday’s final test saw them perform basic techniques, combat drills and Kata, as well as using the weaponry that forms a critical part of their training.

The grading was overseen by Sensei Gary Oliver, who recently achieved his seventh Dan in Texas, as well as Marcus Cassells, 3rd Dan, who founded the Maryborough Karate Club.
