Lohmann eyes back-to-back premierships
Maryborough product Kai Lohmann will be seeking to add another AFL premiership medal to his collection this Saturday after his Brisbane Lions advanced through a thrilling preliminary final over Collingwood.

Following some strong performances against the Geelong Cats and the Gold Coast Suns, where he finished with a season-high three goals, the 22-year-old continued to excel in September football, making a noticeable impact in a final to remember despite some injury concerns.
After leading by 20 points at quarter time, Lohmann’s Lions were seemingly left shell-shocked after the Magpies kicked six unanswered goals in the second term to take a 13-point advantage into half time.
Brisbane found a way to rebound quickly at the start of the second half, booting the first four goals in the third quarter to build a 17-point buffer at the final change.
Collingwood threatened to make a thunderous fourth-quarter come-back, however, the Lions managed to weather the storm, with Lohmann delivering the dagger with just over five minutes left to send the Lions to their third consecutive AFL Grand Final.
It was the cherry on top of another key individual performance for the livewire forward, finishing with a season-high 17 disposals to go with his crucial goal and three marks.
Brisbane’s quest for back-to-back flags will reach its climax this weekend when they take on Geelong, who knocked out former Newstead junior Jack Ginnivan’s Hawthorn in their preliminary final.
It was the Cats who forced the Lions to take the long route to the season finale after winning the qualifying final clash between the two teams by 38 points.
The Cats are well aware of Lohmann’s ability to rise to the big occasion, especially after his game-changing performance in last season’s preliminary final that included 16 disposals, a goal, and four marks, including a memorable hanger over Geelong’s Zach Guthrie.
That was only the appetiser of things to come for Cobra Kai, as on the biggest stage of them all, Lohmann shone brightest, booting three of the Lions’ opening five goals to kickstart Brisbane’s 2024 AFL premiership victory over the Sydney Swans.
Lohmann will look to replicate his outstanding four-goal, 15 disposal, five mark and four tackle performance in last season’s grand final on Saturday, as he hopes to bring another premiership to Brisbane.
