Central Goldfields residents are being encouraged to have their say on council’s draft wastewater management plan to help identify any current or emerging issues within the shire.

The Draft Domestic Wastewater Management Plan 2023 identifies and manages risks to land and water resources, and guides council’s management of domestic wastewater for non-sewered areas — and provides clarity and technical advice to landowners, land capability assessors, plumbers and builders.

Central Goldfields Shire mayor Grace La Vella said community input into the draft plan was essential.

“Except for the main business centre of Maryborough, as well as parts of Dunolly and Carisbrook, a large part of Central Goldfields is not serviced by reticulated sewer,” she said.

“This means we need to manage existing and new septic systems well to protect the environment and public health. It is council’s legislative duty to do this.”

Councils are required by law to have a plan to support growth and development in unsewered areas, while ensuring environmental and natural assets are protected.

If your property has a septic system or is in an unsewered area which might need one in the future, the plan will help you understand council’s legislated responsibilities.

Read the draft Domestic Wastewater Management Plan 2023 online at www.engage.cgoldshire.vic.gov.au/wastewaterplan, or hard copies are on display at council’s Customer Service Centre, 22 Nolan Street, Maryborough.

Feedback submissions are open now until 5 pm, Friday, June 2.
