Dancers are being invited to attend the Casablanca Club’s upcoming fundraiser event.

The Casablanca Club is asking people to put on their dancing shoes and head to Avoca Hall this Sunday for the Cops ‘N’ Kids with Cancer fundraiser.

Dance organiser Jan Tribe said it has been terrific to welcome dancers back after COVID restrictions, and the club is hopeful their regular dances will soon attract pre-pandemic numbers.
“People came from everywhere for the dances,” she said.

“We started in 2015 and often used to get more than 60 people in the hall — people from Melbourne, St Arnaud, Bendigo — word spread. I was quite surprised at how far people would travel.”

Cops ‘N’ Kids was founded in 1995 by members of Victoria Police to support children affected by cancer, by providing kids with a fun camp experience in a friendly and safe environment.

Activities on the camps vary according to the age of the children, but include joy flights in planes and helicopters, face painting, motorbike and truck rides.

The camps also give the families of seriously ill children much-needed respite from everyday anxieties and caring responsibilities.

Jan Tribe and fellow Casablanca club volunteer Alan May are no strangers to fundraising.

The pair were instrumental in starting community radio station Goldfields FM and since that time have supported a variety of community initiatives through their monthly movie nights and dance clubs held at the Avoca Hall.

The Old Time Dance Fundraiser will start at 1 pm this Sunday.

Just $15 per person, entertainment is provided by Rod McKenzie and dancers can enjoy afternoon tea courtesy of the Avoca Hospital Auxiliary.

All funds raised will go to support the work of Cops ‘N’ Kids.
