Locals interested in starting a career in nursing within their own community are being encouraged to head along to information sessions starting this week for the
Maryborough District Health Service’s (MDHS) Diploma of Nursing.
The health service took on its first cohort of students for the two-year diploma — run locally in partnership with Bendigo TAFE — in 2018 and applications are now open for 2023.
A series of information sessions and pre-entry tests are lined up over the coming months to help residents interested in taking on the diploma and MDHS operations manager of organisational development Sarah Broad said the course is a great opportunity for locals.
“The TAFE course run at Maryborough offers the benefits of being able to learn and study locally with experienced nurses and educators in our community,” she said.
“We often hear from students that the experience gained from learning in a small to medium sized health service means they get more breadth and exposure to different clinical scenarios.
“You also get to be part of a fun and amazing team, while helping to connect our community to great person-centred healthcare.”
Student Tiarne Gale, who is currently in her final year of studying a Diploma of Nursing at MHDS, said having a local course means she can complete her training just 10 minutes’ drive from her home.
“Learning here at MDHS has been a very positive experience for me,” she said.
“I’ve made many friends and built many relationships. I find the teachers very welcoming and knowledgeable, and have a massive respect for everything nurses do.
“We’ve learnt a lot of skills such as caring for the elderly, slide sheets, basic life support, IVs and taking blood — it’s harder than it looks.
“It’s very inclusive and a great learning environment, where you get a lot of one-on-one attention to develop your skills.”
Bendigo TAFE CEO Sally Curtain said the course allows nurses to get into the workforce quickly.
“Our two-year nursing diploma means our students can get into the workforce quicker, and then work in their last two years if they choose to complete their bachelor’s degree to become a registered nurse,” she said.
“Nursing is a rewarding career with high job prospects for students when they complete their study, while also supporting the most vulnerable members of our community.”
Information sessions will be held at MDHS on Wednesday, November 16, November 29 and in 2023 on January 13.
