Local triathletes honoured with awards
Local triathletes Josh Britten and Kate Cain have capped off a successful 2024/25 season, repeating as the Maryborough and District Triathlon Club’s Open Male and Female champions.
The club celebrated another action-packed season of swimming, riding and running at their presentation dinner last Friday night, recognising the excellent efforts of members on and off the course.
Britten made it three on the trot with his most recent Open Male Club Championship, showcasing some exceptional consistency throughout the season.
After being introduced to the sport by his next-door neighbour, Britten has produced an unprecedented local record, winning four consecutive Under 16 Male Club Championships from 2016/17 to 2019/20.
“It’s always something I’ve been around since I was probably 12 years old, so it’s a privilege to win the open category,” Britten said.
“Being able to compete with yourself and trying to get better every time you do it, seeing the enjoyment of everyone out on the course and doing it for themselves is great.
“There isn’t anything else like it locally, Bendigo and Ballarat are probably the closest, so to have something like this in Maryborough is huge and people can experience what triathlons are like.
“It’s something a lot of people can do and you don’t realise it but it’s actually a very enjoyable sport.”
Cain also repeated as Open Female Club Champion after winning her first title in the 2023/24 season.
Following a lengthy hiatus from the sport, Cain said the club’s friendly atmosphere encouraged
her to make a return to triathlons and hopes more locals join in on the fun.
“I think my first (triathlon) was 15 years ago when I lived in Melbourne and I did them for a few years,” she said.
“I didn’t do any for a while when I had children and then I’ve been involved in the club here for about five years.
“Since I’ve joined the Mary-borough club, it has been very welcoming, I’m still happy to turn up and know that everyone’s supportive and that we all have our different goals.
“We have all ages and levels of fitness competing together.”
Other awards presented on the night went to Ella Govan, who won her sixth Under 16 Female Club Championship, and club secretary Jenny Barras who picked up her second Best Club Person award after winning the accolade in 2013/14.
“The ongoing success of the club depends on the vital support of club volunteers, and Jenny is a role model to so many,” club president Martin Mark said.
The championship dinner was also a celebration of club member Jane Anderson’s recent achievements, qualifying for the sports pinnacle event in the Kailua-Kona Hawaii Ironman in October 2025.
The club has also produced its 2025/26 club calendar, with the first event being a Duathlon from the Maryborough Sports and Leisure Centre on Sunday, August 10.
