The Committee for Maryborough is calling on local businesses to get involved in a series of training days coming up, in a bid to provide staff development opportunities close to home.
A business-oriented organisation, the Committee for Maryborough has most recently turned its hand to bringing first aid training courses to the region — saving businesses the expense of sending staff away to undertake training.
Off the back of the successful first aid training, the committee’s executive officer Kerrie Dowling said additional training options, including for fire wardens and in mental health first aid are being looked at.
“We did our first lot of first aid training the other week with Edlyn Food, True Foods, the Maryborough Golf Club and a few others which was great,” she said.
“We’re looking to provide a service here where companies and businesses don’t have to send staff to Bendigo or Ballarat for training which can be quite expensive with travel costs.
“We’re also investigating bringing health and safety rep training, advanced first aid training, mental health first aid and fire warden training to the area.”
Additional first aid courses will be underway in July and October and Ms Dowling said the committee were conscious of business needs.
“A lot of businesses are interested in this, but it can be hard because training like this has an expiry date,” she said.
“It’s a matter of trying to line up staff to do training at the same time, keeping in mind they have all completed it at different times over the years and those training certificates expire at different times.
“We’re also conscious of not wanting to remove all staff from a business at the same time to do the training, it has to be staggered.”
Introducing local training courses is one of a raft of initiatives the organisation is currently working on, with bi-monthly health and safety meetings also in the works.
“We tried to do a get together of health and safety representatives from different local businesses to pool resources and connect,” Ms Dowling said.
“We’re looking to run a get together like that once every couple of months with guest speakers coming in.
“The numbers were down at the first session we held which is a bit disappointing, we are trying to support local businesses so I’d certainly encourage anyone and everyone to get involved.”
