Titled Emergent, students from the Maryborough Education Centre (MEC) and Highview College will exhibit their expansive portfolio of artwork created during their VCE studies.

Highview College art teacher Elliott Tregonning said the exhibition is the culmination of everything students have learned.

“A final work by a year 12 arts student not only represents a year’s work by a student but also celebrates a long journey in education and showcases all of the skills they have developed,” he said.

“The work on display highlights the diverse range of students from the region in a variety of methods and mediums.

“All students completing their education at this level are reaching a significant milestone in their life and this exhibition visually represents this achievement.”

According to MEC arts coordinator Jennifer Latch, the showcase is a fantastic opportunity for emerging artists.

“A student art exhibition holds significant importance as it provides an important shared platform for young creatives from both schools to showcase their talents and academic achievements,” she said.

“The Emergent exhibition not only celebrates the students’ hard work but also offers them experience by displaying their work in a gallery setting.

“Students get to experience the process of presenting and critiquing art in a formal space, which enhances their confidence and prepares them for future artistic endeavours.”

MEC student Sam said it’s a surreal feeling to see his work hanging at the art gallery.

“It’s pretty cool to be a part of this exhibition and it’s good to be recognised,” he said.

“This is something that we all worked hard on and sometimes it doesn’t really get looked at as much.”

Highview College student Mackayla agreed with Sam and hopes residents enjoy exploring their artistic ideas.

“It’s really a complete feeling, it’s nice to see the result of an artwork in an exhibition instead of [just] taking it home,” she said.

“Being able to express things that are important to you or explore those ideas through art is a really good feeling.”

The Emergent exhibition officially opens today at 5 pm and will be on display in the Central Goldfields Art Gallery until November 24.
