Margaret Flowers has released her newest book, Cooking Through Time at the Cottage.

An “unusual history-come-cooking concept” is how local resident Margaret Flowers describes her newest book which provides insight into the historical context of the recipes it includes.

Released this week, Cooking Through Time at the Cottage is Ms Flowers’ second book and builds on her life-long fascination with recipes and their history.

A former school teacher, Ms Flowers spent the better part of three years working on her latest book, which follows in the footsteps of her first non-fiction title The Passionate Game, a history of the Maryborough golf course written for its centenary.

With an extensive collection of cookery books, Ms Flowers said few of them explained the culture and history of the food they presented to the public — something she set out to change with her book.

“Born at the end of WWII, I grew up in the country where many families grew their own vegetables, had their own hens and biked or walked into the paddocks to collect mushrooms and fruit from trees,” she said.

“Money was tight then so the family had to make do with what they could obtain.

“I developed an interest in cooking from my mother whose father, a Scot, had taught her an appreciation for food, cooking, herbs and spices. I was always curious from where food ideas came as a result.”

It’s her passion for history that not only links Ms Flowers’ two books, but actually led to her writing them — she is already planning a third book and will focus on the local region.

Ms Flowers’ book is availablefor purchase at the Central Goldfields Visitor Centre or by contacting Marg directly via email at tipphill@bigpond.net.au
