Local netballers star at annual tournament
Over 300 junior netballers converged at the Maryborough Netball Association on Sunday for the local precinct’s biggest annual netball tournament in years.
Starting from the opening centre pass at 9 am, 32 teams from as far as Beaufort, Broadford, Castle-maine, Kilmore and Raywood battled for hours across four age groups.
Among the talented teams entered, five Maryborough Netball Association and three Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League (MCDFNL) repre-sentative sides performed extremely well, with two MCDFNL teams reaching their respective Grand Finals.
Fresh off their impressive showing at Netball Victoria’s Association Championships, the MCDFNL’s 15 and unders ended a dominant tournament by defeating the AFL Central Victoria Netball Academy 14-9.
The MCDFNL’s 17 and unders produced a similar result in their decider, besting the Castlemaine District Netball Association 16-8.
Despite losing the 15 and under Grand Final, the AFL Central Victoria Netball Academy didn’t leave empty-handed, winning both pools in the 13 and under age group.
