The Community Grants program supports local community groups and individuals to deliver new or emerging projects that benefit people in the shire.

Whether it’s launching a new creative workshop, starting a community group, or need materials for an existing group’s latest project, this funding is here to help community groups bring their ideas to life.

The last round of Community Grants saw 17 groups benefit from the program.

Some examples include the establishment of the Mount Alexander Knitting Nannas, and the Harcourt Progress Association for a new safety fence that also serves as a structure to grow edible vines in the community garden.

The Castlemaine Seed Library are set to introduce a new seed board and cabinet to refresh their program in its 10th year, and the Mount Alexander Photographic Society are planning to run public workshops in a bid to expand its community membership.

Mount Alexander Shire Council’s mayor Rosie Annear said the grants program is one of the ways that council supports local community initiatives.

“Our community groups do so much to connect residents, care for the environment, host sports games, and lots more,” she said.

“We had some amazing projects and initiatives in the last round of community grants, and I’m looking forward to seeing what projects come through next.”

Council grants officers will be available to answer the community’s questions and provide one-on-one guidance about applications and eligibility.

Two funding streams are available: small grants, which are up to $3000 and partnership grants, which is up to $10,000.

Community grants will remain open for application until 4 pm on Monday, August 4, while several other grants will also open in the coming weeks.

Event grants will open on Friday, August 8 and remain open until August 29.

Christmas Celebration Grants open on Monday, July 21 and close on Monday, August 18 and Quick Response Event Grants are currently open, set to close on June 30, 2026.
