Lions to launch Leo Club
Hardworking and devote young people are being encouraged to join Carisbrook Lions Club’s brand new youth faction, the Leo Club.
With a handful of young people already starting to form a group, Carisbrook Lions Club president Jefferson Hoober is looking for locals aged between 12 and 18 to pioneer the region’s first ever Leo Club.
“We have talked about it for years and years . . . now I have got about five kids involved. If we can get to 20, we will hold an information night, they can run their own club, what they want to do is really up to them,” he said.
“It’s not about Maryborough, it’s not about Carisbrook, it’s about getting something going in our shire to be able to get young kids to feel good about doing something.”
Mr Hoober said he is keen to have young locals fulfil roles that older or working adult members may not be able to do anymore, as well as creating activities that will specifically interest teenagers.
“It can be anything from running an outdoor cinema, collecting bottles and cans around town, anything they can piggy back off our Lions club, our members are getting older and there’s plenty of things we can give to them,” he said.
Designed for the youngest Lions members, Leo stands for leadership, experience and opportunity, values Mr Hoober said can all be obtained from joining a local organisation at a young age.
“Hopefully, it gets in their blood that they have enjoyed volunteering, they might just step up and become a member of our club, or a club somewhere else down the track,” he said
“They don’t want to be working around old fogies, they want to get up to their own fun ... it’s their club.
“It’s good for their wellbeing, it’s good for their mental health, it’s good for interacting ... you get out into the community, you volunteer and you get well known. It helps you in future become a better person.”
Joining is free, and uniforms will be provided. Interested teens or parents are encouraged to call Mr Hoober on 0427 326 166.
