Lions support Red Cross

The Maryborough Lions Popup Bookshop Sale has been deemed a success, with $800 raised for the local Red Cross.
Local book lovers were treated to bargain deals at the two-day shop, with all books and DVDs available for $2 and kids could fill a bag of children’s books for the same price.
Maryborough Lions Club Bookshop manager Lorraine Parker was delighted to see residents support the Maryborough Red Cross.
“We have a large supply of books which have been generously donated and we thought ‘where are we going to store these books’ — we had the idea to have a pop-up book shop and give the money to the local Red Cross,” she said.
“It’s the only pop-up book sale that we have had, we had 123 customers come in over those two days and our members did a great job setting up and also the Red Cross members who came along to assist.”
According to Ms Parker, partnerships with other community groups help achieve the club’s goal of assisting locals.
“Over the past few years, our community groups have started to work together a lot more which I think is absolutely fantastic. Rather than all of us trying to fundraise on our own, we can all assist each other,” she said.
“Our motto is ‘we serve’ and we try to do that within our community and help individual families, schools and organisations like the Red Cross because we know how important it is.”
Maryborough Red Cross chair Jan Williamson said she was thankful for the donation, which will go towards a vital community service at the request of the bookshop.
“This donation will go towards the patient transport carpool and the club decided that’s where they would like to raise the money to,” she said.
“We have a lot of volunteer drivers here who are happy to take patients all around the district and even go as far as Melbourne and Geelong.
“I want to give a big thank you to the Lions club, it is a very generous offer to us, they could have given it to many other great organisations in town but they chose Red Cross and we really appreciate that.”
