Harcourt withstood a brave Newstead challenge to prove too strong for the Kangaroos, with the Lions now three games away from an undefeated home and away campaign.

While the Lions are still a way away from being full strength, they are getting the job done with no fuss every week, and six goals in both the first and last quarters helped set them on their way.

A high-octane opening quarter had Newstead Recreation Reserve rocking, with the Lions six goals matched by Newstead’s four goals to give the game a new urgency, with the Lions leading by 11 points at quarter time.

The Lions were determined to stop Newstead from kicking more goals in the second, and they were successful in their endeavours, restricting them to four points, but they were unable to make them pay, kicking just one goal themselves to leave the margin sitting at 15 points at the main break.

Newstead’s best quarter was the third, kicking three goals to two to set up a grandstand finish, sitting just two goals behind at the last break.

But the Lions proved much too strong, kicking six goals to four in the final term to eventually hold out and take their 28-point win.

Seven goals between Alex Code and Kristian Bruce were key for Harcourt, with both joined by Mark Noonan, Darby Semmens, Kal Huntly and Jonte O’Neil in their best players.

Angus Mayes, Heath Lawrence, Sam Reece, Joel Smith, Rhys Smith and Alex Murphy were best for Newstead, with four players kicking two goals each.
