After going without a local market for a number of years, Maryborough is in for a treat, with the Carisbrook Lions Club jumpstarting a new community market in the IGA car park next month.
The new market is set to kick off on Sunday, October 2 and will continue as a monthly market to gauge interest, after Maryborough’s last market — organised by the Maryborough Lions Club — was cancelled last year due to COVID-19.
The Carisbrook Lions Club had previously also run a market at Maryborough’s Station Domain for several years, however this came to an end in 2018.
Club president and Maryborough IGA manager Jefferson Hoober said the club had been wanting to re-introduce a local market for a while and felt now was the right time.
“There is no (Lions club) market in Maryborough or Carisbrook anymore,” he said.
“Both the Maryborough and Carisbrook Lions clubs have run markets in the past but COVID really affected that and they haven’t gotten back off the ground since then.
“Now that I’ve come into IGA, we see there is an opportunity to use the space here in the car park on a Sunday which is our quieter day.
“It’s a good opportunity I think to establish a new market here and bring people back into the town.”
Mr Hoober said the club is currently fielding calls and enquiries from stallholders and said the market is shaping up to have anything and everything.
“At this stage I really don’t know what sort of market it’s going to be — it could be a trash and treasure type market, there could be plants, new things, items sold out of the boot of your car — we’ll open up to any stallholders that want to get involved,” he said.
“There has been quite a bit of interest from the community and also stallholders so far which is really pleasing.”
Mr Hoober said hosting the market was less about making a profit for the club, and more so about livening up the local social and event calendar.
“Everyone likes a market and everywhere we go as a club that has a market, we think ‘gee it would be worthwhile having one locally’,” he said.
“It’s not about making money to us, it’s about putting an event on in our shire and giving people the opportunity to do something locally.
“We’re just going to make a start at this stage so we can gauge what the community response is like and if the town want it.”
Stallholders interested in getting involved with the market are encouraged to contact the Carisbrook Lions Club on 0427 326 166 or 0427 828 466, or contact the club’s Facebook page.
