The Maryborough Lions Club, thanks to the efforts of 18 dedicated cyclists, were able to donate $2077 to Diabetes Australia recently as part of their ‘Lap the Map’ initiative.

Taking in laps of the Energy Breakthrough (EB) track, the cyclists defied bad weather, roadworks around the area and EB itself to complete 1577 laps, with the Lions Club making a $1 donation for every completed lap. They then took it upon themselves to donate an additional $500 all in the name of diabetes research.

Lorraine Parker, from the Maryborough Lions Club, said she was impressed with the ability of all riders to navigate the challenge despite record-breaking rainfall in the area.

“It’s absolutely fantastic, considering the bad weather we had, it was an excellent outcome for 18 riders to ride those 1577 laps. It’s all going to a good cause, and as a club, we appreciate their efforts for putting in for it,” she said.

“There were a few days where they couldn’t cycle, but the days they were able to get out, they really made up for it, and we had Maria Lacey riding 387 laps as the top rider, and that was an outstanding effort given all the rain that we have had. She’s a very dedicated, very committed rider, but they all are. We have appreciated all of their efforts.”

Parker called for any aspiring cyclist to join in the challenge next year.

“We’ll have it again next year, hopefully weather permitting we will have more cyclists. We had 26 last year, but given the weather and the works going on around the skate park, some weren’t confident in riding, and that is understandable, but we look forward to doing it all again next year,” she said.
