The Maryborough Camera Club is hosting an afternoon presentation by internationally recognised photographer Colin Rosewarne following his recent trip to South Africa.
Mr Rosewarne is mostly known for his motorsport photography, taking photos for Australian Motor Cycle News, Channel 9 and MotoGP over his 49 year career, a career he never thought about while growing up.
“I started off racing motorcycles when I was 18, but I was lousy and I kept falling off, and the GP that I was going to said I was an idiot to continue,” he said.
“I was unsure of what I was going to do so the GP, who was also a photographer, suggested I take photos of the motorcycles instead.
“It is the best seat in the house, doesn’t hurt when you fall over and it is much cheaper.”
Even though it isn’t what his career is known for, Mr Rosewarne said he always had an interest in wildlife photography, and made it a dream of his to complete a safari trip.
“The trip was a bucket list job that I did as a retirement present to me — it was awfully expensive, but it was something I always wanted to do,” he said.
“I did 28 safaris in 14 days and took just over 11,000 photos in that two and a half weeks and it was just a real eye opener.
“Wildlife photography isn’t my forte, but for me it is just like motorsport, it is just a different object.
“I just had to get used to being arms distance away from something that would eat you.”
While reaching the end of his career, Mr Rosewarne said it is important to him to support others in his field.
“I want to pass the baton on — I have nearly five decades of experience and nobody is here forever so if you don’t pass on the information and knowledge you have got, its wasted,” he said.
“There is nothing complex about photography, I’m self taught, I have never had a lesson in my life and it’s important to me to pass on that knowledge.”
Maryborough Camera Club president Ron Gale said the club is delighted to have the opportunity to learn from Mr Rosewarne.
“We are extremely excited for Colin’s talk, he has just done this great big tour and he’s published books about it and he’s so excited about showing the photos as well,” he said.
“Photography makes you really excited to see animals wherever you may be, and you can learn from Colin about how he shot them, his equipment and what techniques he uses.
“When somebody like Colin does something special like this, we want to share it with everybody — we have invited other camera clubs along for the day and we hope to get lots of people there.”
The presentation is on Sunday, April 7 from noon at the Carisbrook Senior Citizens Club.
