Life members for Probus
Marjory Shay and Iris Anderson have been recognised for their dedication to the Maryborough Ladies Probus Club, recently inducted as life members.
The pair were honoured to be awarded during the Ladies Probus AGM. A new committee was also announced, which they are both still a part of.
“It’s great, I have never expected anything like this, I’m just happy to do what I can do,” Ms Anderson said.
Becoming a Probus life member requires dedicating extensive service and holding office within the organisation.
Ms Shay has been president twice, secretary for three years, and on the committee for 16 years.
Ms Anderson was president during the pandemic, treasurer for over three years and has been on the committee for over 10 years.
Both recipients agree the organisation has been an important social space for them, and are encouraging others to join.
“Friendship, fellowship and fun describes life in Probus really well. There’s very interesting guest speakers, we have day trips away,” Ms Shay said.
It’s a sentiment Ms Anderson agrees with.
“I enjoy socialising, meeting up, and listening to guest speakers, we are always looking for new members,” she said.
Since the pandemic, the committee has noticed an increase in membership, particularly those joining Ladies Probus.
Probus membership is open to anyone who is retired or semi-retired, offering a range of activities including trips and outings, depending on their interests, and guest speakers.
“We do have a lot of fun at our meetings,” Ms Anderson said.
By joining, members are encouraged to socialise, learn new skills and explore new hobbies.
“I think everyone who has joined since I’ve been here has really enjoyed it,” Ms Shay said.
