Getting ready for a plush time, furry toys from the town will enjoy an eventful slumber-party tonight as part of the Maryborough Regional Library’s eighth annual stuffed animal sleepover.
Dressed in pyjamas, families will make their way down to the library this evening to kick start the event by participating in various activities including a story time session and supper — following which the children will bid their toys farewell for the night.
“Families head off home and they leave their special little soft toy friends with the library staff for the sleepover,” Maryborough Regional Library team leader Bec Clark said.
“All the toys get up to lots of cheeky adventures. Last year, they went across and visited the Maryborough Paramount Theatre and enjoyed a movie — sometimes they also put some updates on our social media throughout the evening.
“The next morning, families get to come back and pick up their toys, as well as some photos of the adventures they got up to.”
Ms Clark said that the event, which has been running for a decade barring two COVID-affected years, was created to strengthen the community’s ties with the library.
“It’s all about encouraging a love of the library, a love of books and a love of reading, which is so important,” she said.
“We like to come up with unique ideas and do things that are a bit different from what other libraries are doing and when we first started this event, no other library in Australia, that we knew of, was doing it.
“Everyone just loves it and we’ve learned a lot over the years and try to keep it fresh with different ideas every year. The kids absolutely love coming in the next morning to pick up their toys and see what they have been doing throughout the night.”
The free event will start tonight, with sessions planned from 6 to 7 pm, before the sleepover gets underway.
