MALDON 8.8 (56) def by LEXTON 12.7 (79)
Lexton are flying high in third position on the ladder, coming from behind to defeat Maldon by 23 points at Bill Woodfull Reserve.
The middle two quarters did the trick for the Tigers, kicking nine goals to three to get the job done, and they now move to within a game behind Harcourt on the ladder.
However, the early stages on Saturday suggested anything but a Lexton victory, with Maldon getting the jump. The Dons kicked four goals to one in the opening term to lead by 19 points at the opening change.
But Lexton charged back into the game in the second quarter, kicking the only three goals of the contest to level the scores at half time.
The third quarter was going to be pivotal to decide how the rest of the game would play out, and it would end up bucking the trend of much of the day, with a high-scoring, end-to-end quarter delivering nine goals.
Lexton, however, kicked six goals straight in what was a very efficient performance, while Maldon added three goals, but it was the Tigers by 16 points at the last change.
The Tigers finished full of running, and kicked two goals to one to ensure they would take victory.
In a season of such fine margins, Lexton might look back on their two victories over the Dons with importance as they continue to seek a spot inside the top four at season’s end.
Josh Sargent led from the front for the Tigers, and was named best on ground, while Jaykeb Lench, Lachlan Rokebrand, Alex McLean, Jack Cuttler and William Brand helped Lexton assert their dominance after quarter time, with Sargent, Tyler Trickey, Pearce Antonio, Brand and Jacob Trevenen kicking two goals apiece.
A win for the Dons would have seen them move up to fourth position on the ladder, and after such a bright start, would be disappointed they weren’t able to go on with it.
Matthew Gray, Alex Farrow, Tanner Bishop, Darcy Kelly, Billy Johns and Seb Greene were all named in the best, while Brodie Leonard-Shannon, Johns and Cody Gunn kicked two goals apiece.
