Lexton claw Eagles with six second quarter goals
Lexton has bounced back strongly from last week’s heavy defeat to Talbot, overcoming a competitive Dunolly outfit by 39 points at Deledio Reserve.
The Eagles started the better of the two sides, taking advantage of their opportunities early to hold a four-point lead at quarter time.
Dunolly’s pressure around the contest and willingness to attack the corridor caused Lexton some early headaches, with Mitchell Goodwin and Jay McDonald heavily involved.
However, the Tigers turned the game dramatically in the second quarter, piling on six goals to one in their best patch of football for the season.
Their midfield gained ascendancy around stoppages and their ball movement became far cleaner, allowing their forwards to capitalise.
Jaxon Thomas played a key role in the turnaround, proving a constant threat inside 50 and finishing with a superb seven-goal haul for the afternoon.
By half time, Lexton had turned its narrow deficit into a commanding 27-point lead and had wrestled full control of the contest.
Dunolly responded with improved intensity after the main break and remained competitive throughout the third term, but every time the home side threatened, Lexton found an answer to maintain its advantage.
The Tigers then sealed the result with a strong final quarter, kicking four goals to one to complete an encouraging win on the road.
Austin Corliss was outstanding for Lexton and was well supported by Thomas, Henry Marshman, Justin Hobson, Jackson Kurzman and Aiden Broughton in a well-rounded team performance.
For Dunolly, Goodwin battled tirelessly throughout the afternoon, while McDonald, Bailey Morton, Kallum Schepers, Lachlan Tranter and Lachlan Watson were named among the Eagles’ best contributors.
The victory gives Lexton an important confidence boost after a difficult fortnight, while Dunolly remains searching for consistency as they continue to rebuild through the early stages of the season.
