Unfortunately, the Carisbrook Lady Redbacks’ under 18s season has come to a close, with the team unable to stop a rampant Ballarat Swans in their elimination final on Sunday afternoon.
On what was a wet, torrid day at Eastern Oval, the Redbacks were unable to score as a Swans team were ruthless in keeping their own season alive.
The first quarter saw Carisbrook push to score early on, and generated a couple of inside 50s as they looked to get the jump on the Swans. However, it was not to be, as Ballarat settled into their own rhythm and started winning the territory battle. Two goals for the Swans ensured they would take a 16-point lead at the first break.
As the wind picked up going into the second quarter, it seemed to favour Ballarat’s forward 50, and they were able to score a fortuitous goal to begin the quarter when the ball bounced awkwardly in the goal square, evading a desperate Carisbrook defence.
That gave the Swans great confidence to continue attacking, and they used the wind advantage to full effect, scoring another two goals to essentially put the game out of reach for the Lady Redbacks, taking a 37-point lead at half time.
To their credit, the Lady Redbacks played some excellent defensive football in the third quarter, especially given the conditions had not improved. They were able to hold the Swans to just one behind for the quarter as they trailed by 38 points at the final change.
With the result of the game sealed, there was a big push from the Carisbrook contingent to get the team to score in the final quarter and end their season on a positive note.
However, the Swans were in no mood to allow the Lady Redbacks to hit the scoreboard, kicking two goals in the final quarter.
While the Redbacks pushed hard to finish the game off with a score, the Swans defended stoutly to ensure they would win 7.10 (52) to 0.0 (0).
Despite the margin, there was a lot of pride from the team as they left the ground, with a season full of great improvement within the team, despite failing to win a game for the season.
Tara Kennedy, Mary Fitzgibbon, Olivia Butler, Tara McBean, Tiani Jardine and Laylah Smith were all amongst Carisbrook’s best for the day.
