Lady Redbacks encounter clinical Cobras
The Carisbrook Lady Redbacks faced a tough challenge against top-of-the-table Bacchus Marsh on Sunday, fighting hard in a 170-point defeat.
The Cobras sank their fangs into the Lady Redbacks and remained unrelenting until the final siren, kicking 25 goals in a complete team performance.
Hailie Burton, Kayla Carter, Chloe Ross and Meg Johnson made their season debuts at Maddingley Park for a depleted Carisbrook team hoping to improve upon their convincing loss to Ballarat the week prior.
Despite the persistent efforts of Charlotte Cain and Tamika Loone-Grundy around the contest, Bacchus Marsh quickly took control of the clearance battle.
The Lady Redbacks tried to contain the swell of entries inside their defensive 50, but they couldn’t stop Bacchus Marsh from taking a 41-point lead into quarter time.
While the Cobras remained venomous following the opening interval, veterans Olivia Butler and Danae Every led an emboldened Carisbrook defence that was applying more pressure on the Bacchus Marsh forwards.
Even with Bacchus Marsh having 14 scoring shots in the second quarter, the Lady Redbacks held the Cobras to 39 points, trailing by 80 points at half time.
Bacchus Marsh recalibrated their kicking accuracy after the main break, booting 8.2 in the third term to accelerate to a 130-point lead at three-quarter time.
Ella Bradbury and Isabella Faralla ended with seven and six goals respectively for the Cobras, while captain Amy Garofalo and Jamie-Lee Speakman booted four majors each as Bacchus Marsh completed a 25.20.(170) to no score victory.
Emme Johnson continues to shine as a rising star for Carisbrook, named among the best players for the fourth consecutive game. She was joined by Cain, Butler, Every, Loone-Grundy and Arna Tatchell.
The Lady Redbacks will return to Carisbrook Recreation Reserve this Sunday, hosting a Redan team looking to avenge last season’s runner-up finish.
Carisbrook opened their 2026 campaign against the Lions at Alfredton Recreation Reserve, keen to improve upon their 147-point defeat this weekend.
