The Maryborough Lady Blazers got a much-needed win on Saturday night against the Macedon Ranges Rockies, in a result that keeps their season alive.
The Lady Blazers were somewhat shorthanded across their lineup, however, it was also one of their strongest starting fives that they’ve sent out so far this season, with Elisa Pica making her return to the setup.
The move paid dividends immediately, with the Lady Blazers establishing an early lead thanks to a strong opening term which yielded 26 points, as well as some good defensive play which saw them hold Macedon to just 14 points.
The second quarter was more of a battle, with buckets harder to come by, but the Lady Blazers were holding firm, scoring 14 points to 13 to increase the lead to 13 points at the main break.
Whenever Macedon asked questions, Maryborough seemed to have all the answers. In particular, it was the work of playing-coach Faith McKenzie, who poured in 26 points, and Maddy Egan, who added 20 of her own, which kept the Rockies at bay.
Sophie Pica was also finding her groove, particularly from three-point territory, as she scored 18 points in her best return so far.
The Lady Blazers scored 22 points in the third term to the Rockies’ 19 to extend their lead to 16 points at the final change.
The last quarter was relatively high-scoring, with both teams adding 22 points apiece.
But it was Maryborough’s night, as the Lady Blazers got back on track ahead of an important fixture at home against high-flying Kyneton next week.
