The Maryborough Lady Blazers will take centre stage this week as they seek their first win of the year, when they play the Macedon Ranges Rockies on Saturday night.

A very young Lady Blazers outfit has taken to the floor in recent weeks, and while it hasn’t translated into wins just yet, it has given a talented crop of young basketballers much needed game time.

Last week, the Lady Blazers were able to take it right up to the Melton Thoroughbreds, and eventually went down by five points, suggesting that a win might not be far around the corner.

After trailing by three points at the first change, the Lady Blazers were able to have a strong second term, scoring 19 points to 14 to hit the front by half time.

Pleasingly, the Lady Blazers were able to maintain their competitive streak across all four quarters, and were well in the game throughout.

However, Melton were just a little bit stronger in the second half, outscoring the Lady Blazers 34-27 to eventually take a five-point win.

Playing coach Faith McKenzie continued to show that she is one of the best scorers in the Country Basketball League (CBL), scoring another 16 points to take her tally to 74 for the season, sitting equal-fourth in the league for scoring.

Maddy Egan made her return to the starting lineup, and scored 17 points, while Keisha Tonzing has also been a welcome addition in the recent past, scoring 10 points.

They now face a winless Macedon Ranges Rockies team who will have been disappointed to let slip a 13-point half time lead to the Swan Hill Flyers last week, before eventually losing by 10 points.

With six games to go, there are still a number of chances for the Lady Blazers to storm back into finals contention, but they will need to start winning, especially with a winnable game like this one on the horizon.

The men’s Blazers will have the bye this weekend, but return to host Castlemaine next Saturday.
