Laanecoorie will turn gold next weekend, as the Laanecoorie Gold Bash returns for its 10th anniversary and first event since 2019 due to COVID.

The event features all things gold and sees prospecting enthusiasts flock to the region from all over. After it was called off last minute due to lockdowns last year, event coordinator Di Hodgson said it’s exciting to be back.

“It’s really exciting, this is our 10th anniversary, we missed two years due to COVID,” she said.

“If we’re going by the patron numbers from last time, it should be around the 600 mark. It helps keep the smaller towns alive, busy and in business.

“Minelab Metal Detectors have donated a top of the range detector to auction off, and everyone’s come to the party. We’ve had a lot of interest and a lot of people donating.”

The event is not only a chance for gold enthusiasts to gather, but also acts as a fundraiser for the Peter McCallum Cancer Foundation in honour of one the event’s founders, Jim Stewart, who passed away from cancer in 2013.

The event raised over $50,000 in 2019 and with a jam-packed three-day program lined up next month, will be looking to raise more funds.

Activities will include gold panning, displays, stalls, demonstrations, a gold tour, prospecting lectures, auction, raffle and more.

“Any donations or support we can get, we appreciate,” Ms Hodgson said.

“We’re still looking for gold donations to put in kids’ showbags.”

The Laanecoorie Gold Bash will run from October 7 to 9 at the Laanecoorie Lakeside Park. Entry is free.
