Laanecoorie Dunolly continue to be the competition benchmark, and Maryborough will be their next target.

Laane currently find themselves in the unique position of having scored the fewest runs in the competition, yet sit atop the ladder thanks to two dominant victories against Clunes and Colts Phelans.

However, to say that would do a disservice to their bowling attack, which has restricted the Magpies to 63 and Colts to 69 in their two innings.

Couple that with Laane’s ability to chase down both totals quickly, and they remain the team to beat.

It will be Maryborough’s turn to try and stop them this week, but, for the young outfit, the season so far has been a struggle.

It’s a vastly different starting 11 for the Owls, and with a number of young players in the team still finding their feet at A grade level, a lot rests on the likes of Mitch McClure and Tom Hart, while A reserve captain Bradey Tranter put in a much-needed shift last week, top-scoring with 45.

While the bowling attack impressed in their first game against Colts, it was a different scenario against Carisbrook, as they were unable to take a wicket in their 10-wicket defeat.

In comparison, it’s hard to see fault in Laane’s lineup at the moment.

Their bowling lineup has been exceptional this season, with five different players taking multiple wickets, including new recruit Sergio Rosier, who finished with 2/12 and impressed with the bat, finishing unbeaten on 19.

Zach Graham added another two wickets for just eight runs last Saturday, while Daniel Romeo moved alongside Ben Gunn as their leading wicket-taker with another wicket against Colts.

With the bat, new recruit Luke Smith made an instant impression, scoring 34 against Colts, while Rosier, with his aforementioned 19, also played his role.

Sam Bartlett, who will come up against his former team for the first time, did not bat last week, but impressed in round one with his unbeaten 28.

Incredibly, this weekend will see Laane and Maryborough meet for the first time in a T20 game, while this will also be their first one-day meeting since the 2020/21 grand final.

On that occasion, Laane took a dramatic two-wicket victory, staving off a hat-trick from Tranter, with Graham and Gunn scoring 28 apiece, while Bartlett top scored for Maryborough with 72.
