Maryborough and Laanecoorie Dunolly are set to do battle on Saturday afternoon, with an interesting clash looming between the Owls’ bowling power and Laane’s incredible batting depth.
Laane have shown in their two games thus far this season that they have absolutely no trouble in building solid partnerships and getting the runs needed to both defend and chase down a total, which has only been bolstered by the arrival of Indian first-class star Samit Gohil last week.
The Owls have shown an ability to keep the run-rate down in games, as evidenced by their excellent bowling performance against Beaufort. But although they were able to hold Colts Phelans to 103 two weeks ago in their last game, it was a total that proved too much to muster for their batting lineup, and they’ll be looking to bounce back tomorrow afternoon.
In that particular game against Colts, only Rohan MacKay and Sam Bartlett were successful with the bat, making above 10 runs. Against a team like Laane, they can not afford to lose early wickets.
Laane were undaunted by Colts’ early form last week. Despite reaching 1/84, the game turned thanks to Alex Sutton’s impact with the ball, taking 4/17 off his eight overs, including the key wickets of Wayne Stubbings and Ed Foreman, who combined for 95 of Colts’ 144 runs.
Their strong batting lineup has complemented their bowling lineup very nicely, with nine scores of 10 or more in their two innings so far, and perhaps most importantly, eight of those have generated 19 or more runs.
Gohil’s addition to the team last week yielded an impressive 40 runs in his first innings, while Tom Hannett and Benjamin Gunn were a good support cast, scoring 27 and 29 not out respectively.
This is the two teams’ first meeting in a one-day game since the dramatic 2020/21 final.
On that occasion, the Owls made a strong start thanks to Bartlett, who scored 72 runs off 117 balls to anchor their innings, while Lachlan Morganti was another solid contributor, scoring 21. It was enough to see the Owls reach 6/143 off their 40 overs.
In response, it looked like Laane were set to cruise towards victory, with Liam Mottram, Tyler Hinds, Zach Graham and Gunn all making above 20 runs, helping Laane to 3/120 before Bradey Tranter changed the course of the game with a hat-trick in his 4/28. In a thrilling finish, Laane were able to find the 24 runs required with just two wickets and six balls to spare to take a premiership victory.
