Big scores from Kamaljot Romana, Alex Cook and Matt Smith and a five-wicket haul from Joe Lovel saw Laanecoorie Dunolly claim a 209-run victory over Carisbrook at Carisbrook Recreation Reserve.

Laane won the toss and elected to bat, sensing that there were plenty of runs to be had for their top order in the pitch.

Their hunch was right early on as Romana and Tom Hannett quickly motored to 62 for the first wicket stand, before Hannett was the first wicket of the day, caught and bowled by Cole Harris for 22.

With Romana’s ascension to opener, Tom Hart made the move to first drop, and he helped Romana continue on, putting together 50 by the 12th over.

Hart was also scoring at a brisk pace, and scored three quick fours before he was trapped in front for LBW by Dean Nalder just prior to the drinks break for 24.

Romana, in the meantime, looked every bit a centurion, having hit anything just slightly off leg stump or off stump for four, with 15 of them for the afternoon, as well as two sixes.

But a well-flighted ball from James Adam left him cramped for space, and clean-bowled for a terrific 86.

Cook and Smith carried on the job that Romana had started, and put together an electrifying partnership.

After making 116 last week, Cook continued on with his terrific form with the bat, while Smith broke the shackles with some good batting time behind him this time around.

The duo would go at well over a run a ball in what was a 135-run partnership, with Smith scoring the bulk of those runs in putting together 77, with 10 fours and three sixes.

However, his innings would come to an end when he hit a ball straight to Martin Mark off the bowling of Liam Hurse.

Cook would run himself out in the back end of the innings after a quickfire 20-run partnership with Zach Graham for a well-made 80 off 58 balls.

Graham and Sam Bartlett guided Laane to 5/325, with Graham un-beaten on 14 and Bartlett unbeaten on one.

Incredibly, every Laane batsman at the crease had a strike rate of 100 or greater.

In a tough day for Carisbrook’s bowlers, Adam had the best figures with 1/37 off four overs, while Hurse claimed 1/44 off eight.

With Laane making an even more imposing total than their 297 the week before, it was going to be a tough slog for Carisbrook, but they would give it everything they had, doubtless.

The Brookers were able to start well in getting themselves a 27-run opening stand, with William Coutts and Mark batting with discipline.

However, it would be Lovel that struck first, with Coutts hitting a ball straight to Graham for 13.

That seemed to ignite Lovel, who had been bowling well for not as much reward this season, and he broke the shackles, claiming a second wicket almost instantly when he bowled Mark for 15.

Carisbrook would lose 4/6 when Liam Hurse was caught and bowled by Daniel Romeo, followed by Lovel claiming his third wicket when he bowled Cooper Mark.

Nalder and Cole Harris would steady the ship a little bit, however, and were able to put on a 27-run stand to get Carisbrook past 50.

In doing so, they also accelerated the run-rate slightly, going at almost a run a ball.

Harris would be next to go, however, with the score on 60, bowled by Cook for 14, and Cook would soon have a 12th wicket of the season when he lured Nalder into playing a shot straight to Hart for 22.

Romana soon got in on the action by claiming the wicket of Adam — who had taken Romana’s wicket earlier in the day — for nought, and it was 7/72.

To Carisbrook’s credit, they kept on fighting, and Ash Dridan and Atticus Cullinan were able to get the Brookers towards 100.

Dridan went for 17, and he was Lovel’s fourth wicket.

Caleb Cluff’s fighting 18 helped Carisbrook pass 100, hitting three fours as he looked to be aggressive.

Thang Nguyen took his first wicket of the day when he had Cluff hit a shot straight to Romana, and then Lovel finished off the innings with his five wicket haul, with Cullinan hitting a ball straight to Romeo.

Lovel finished with the figures of 5/24 off 6.1 overs, while Cook too 2/15 off three.

Both teams will now sit out for a week as Energy Breakthrough takes hold.
