Maryborough were unable to stop Kyneton on Saturday, as the Tigers dominated from the outset to take a 21-goal victory.

Coming into the game, it could have been seen as anyone’s for the taking, and in a game that was important for the Magpies to get back to level pegging for the season, they were unable to stop Kyneton from taking control early.

Kyneton were able to score 17 goals in the opening quarter, while restricting Maryborough to just nine, taking an early eight-goal lead as a result.

The Tiger onslaught continued in the second quarter, with goal shooter Michelle Fletcher in particular proving hard to stop. The Tigers added 15 goals to the Magpies’ 10 to take a 13-goal lead at the main break.

Playing-coach Jordan MacIlwain swung changes between quarters, shifting herself to goal shooter and Keely Hare to goal attack to try and get more separation from the Tigers defenders, and it worked, with the Magpies enjoying their best quarter of the day.

Hare scored nine goals for the quarter, with MacIlwain adding three, but it still wasn’t enough to eat into the margin, with the Tigers scoring 15 goals for the quarter to extend their lead to 16 at the last break.

The Tigers again proved too good in the last, scoring 17 goals, while the Magpies again added 12, with the Tigers eventually winning 64-43.

Hare scored 32 goals for the afternoon, while Tali Chadwick was another that played well across wing attack.

The result means the Magpies fall to 1-3, but will have a chance to bounce back this coming Saturday against winless Golden Square.

In other results, Maryborough’s 17 and under team continued their hot start to the season, scoring a 58-14 win over Kyneton to move to 4-0 for the season, ahead of a big game with fourth-placed Golden Square this coming Saturday.

The result also saw the Magpies move into second on the ladder, just eight percent behind league-leaders Sandhurst.
