Talia, Bridget, Elise, Charlie and Patrick are some of the many local athletes looking to make a splash this Sunday at the KIDZ triathlon at the Maryborough Sports and Leisure Centre.

Held at the Maryborough Sports and Leisure Centre, the event is open to all children aged between seven and 12 to try something new and give triathlons a go.

Athletes will first swim 25 metres of the indoor pool before transitioning to Jack Pascoe Reserve for a 900 m bike leg (two laps of the oval) and finishing with a 400 m run leg (one lap of the oval).

Now in its sixth year, Maryborough District Triathlon Club secretary Jenny Barras said the event allows kids to dip their toes into a tri-iffic sport.

“We want to introduce children to the sport of triathlon and promote physical activity through swimming, cycling and running,” she said.

“It’s a good setting at the Maryborough Sports and Leisure Centre because it’s all open for parents and family members to actually see their kids do the swim, ride and run.

“It’s a new experience doing all three in one and if we can get children interested in sport and being physical, that’s always a good thing.”

The club hosts monthly meets at the sports and leisure centre, with local athletes testing themselves with traditional triathlons, reverse triathlons and duathlons throughout the year ,with long and short variants at each meeting.

Alongside the KIDZ triathlon, the club also hosts an annual fun run at the Goldfields Reservoir, with this year’s event planned for Sunday, June 1.

Barras said the club prides itself on welcoming new people to the sport and providing more opportunities for residents to be active.

“We are a very friendly club and welcome new people to the club who just want to come and try,” she said.

“We especially like people to come and try and give us a go and see what they think.”

The KIDZ triathlon is set for this Sunday, March 2 at the Maryborough Sports and Leisure Centre. Registrations open at 9 am on the day for a 9.30 start time.

The registration fee is $10 which is to be paid in cash on the day.
