Newstead took out a thriller by just five points against Talbot to replace the Hawks in eighth position.
Newstead opened the game with the first two goals inside five minutes through Tyler James with a set shot and Koby Smith with a kick off the ground in the goal square.
For the remainder of the quarter Talbot had the majority of play but could only manage four behinds. Jude McGuire had a shot on goal at the 18 minute mark, but it was wide of the goals and Newstead led at quarter time by nine points.
Talbot’s Brad Dunbar opened the Hawks goal scoring when he gathered the ball of the surface with a one arm scoop and goaled on the run to make it a three-point game just two minutes into the second term.
However, it was Newstead who regained their composure and kicked the next four goals in succession, including two late goals to James from free kicks to make it a 26-point margin at half time.
It was goal for goal in the third term, and Michael Runciman was in hot form for the Steaders showing plenty of run and snagging two goals.
Talbot’s Adam Scott also kicked two goals in this term and the margin was 20 points going into the final quarter.
The sunshine came out at the start of the final stanza and it seemed to spark Talbot into action as Aaron Collicoat snuck a goal through from the goal square inside a minute.
The Hawks dominated the final quarter but could only manage to kick another goal at the 12-minute mark, through Jayson Atkins.
Adam Hunter was strong in defence for the Steaders and put the Hawks forwards under pressure, and they missed four shots on goal which saw them fall five points short at the final siren in a very exciting finish.
Newstead named their best players as Hunter, Brad Richardson, Anthony Robins, Hayden Hall, Runciman and Alex Murphy.
Talbot named Mitchell Webb, Trent Barras, Alex Marshall, Sam Hitchings, Luke Kemp, and Rhys Egan as their best players.
