Carisbrook Recreation Reserve hosted a bonanza of cricket on Sunday afternoon as the final round of the Just for Girls Wendy Gray Shield was played.
While the Maryborough District Cricket Association (MDCA) weren’t able to secure any wins, they were able to show consistent improve-ment throughout the day, and continued to fight hard despite the gulf in class.
The MDCA’s first game was against Gisborne White, and with the MDCA batting first, faced an uphill task against Gisborne’s terrific bowling lineup.
Ultimately, the MDCA were bowled out for 16 by the eventual champions, but they were allowed to continue batting in an unofficial capacity.
Saige Purcell batted well to finish with six, while Arabella Koop also scored three runs.
While Gisborne White took no time to clean up the target, there were still some good passages as the MDCA held Gisborne White to under 100, while also taking seven wickets, finishing on 7/88.
Ella Govan bowled well to finish with three wickets, while there were four other wicket takers.
The MDCA moved to the outside ground to finish off their Just for Girls campaign with a second meeting against Castlemaine.
The MDCA’s goal was to bat out their 20 overs, but were fielding first, with Castlemaine taking advantage of a good pitch.
Castlemaine were able to rotate their batters efficiently and were able to score well, but Purcell was able to continue on her good day with a wicket.
However, it was the only wicket that fell throughout the innings, with Castlemaine finishing on 1/110 off their 20 overs.
Despite the difference between the two teams, the MDCA fought very hard to make sure they were able to bat on and give everyone a chance to have a go.
Purcell scored well again with three, while Koop made five, as the MDCA finished all-out for 30 off 15.5 overs.
While it meant that the MDCA would finish winless throughout the shield campaign, the girls were able to show personal improvement throughout the two weeks.
